Hi, i am a new learner of RAM connection. I have used LIMCON for many years. Recently, i tried to import LIMCON file into RAM, the transfer is ok. it is a 230PFC beam splice connection with top&bottom flanges splice+web splice. Don't know why RAM file has "Shear connection" and "moment connection" design, my forces are V=12kN, M=32kNm, axial tension=2kN. The LIMCON result show a design ratio=0.82, but RAM show failing with ratio=1.5 for "moment connection" design. The splice plate THK are 12mm. I thought the connection should be fine for RAM, but it give a failure result. Both LIMCON and RAM give the weakest part is flange plate tension rupture.
I am new to RAM, not sure how it calculate the connection design. The RAM result for "moment connection" didn't show input shear force, while the "Shear connection" didn't show input moment force. Seems the moment connection is only designed for top&bottom flanges splice, while shear connection is only designed for web splice. How RAM design this type of beam splices?
i saw RAM DATA only have "example" for top&bottom flange splice, and another example for web splice only. Do we need to add both together in a RAM connection design? For other connection type also, RAM will add different "category" into one connection design like this? I am quite sure this connection should be "pass", but RAM gave me a "failure" result. Could you help to guide me how i could rectify my input ? Hope could get a reply soon. Thanks
For some joints you would need to create an independent connection for shear and for moment, some others will include both, each one will consider only the load that will apply to each. You can have both in the same joint (as your screenshot).
To check your particular connection please provide your file.
Hi Enrique,
Thanks for your reply. I hope to attach the related files (both shear connection and moment connection) and LIMCON for your reference, but the RAM file is 116KB size, not sure why can't be attached in this message?
I am surprised the moment connection is failing, while LIMCON is Pass. I guess maybe moment connection and shear connection not working together to share the capacity for this type of combined connection, while LIMCON share the capacity? Not sure how RAM work out the calculation. Hope to understand RAM more from your help, because LIMCON will be obsoleted, and we have to use RAM in the future. Please let me know if you need further info. Westconnex Stair connection.lmc
try to attach RAM file here, Westconnex Stair connection 1.zip"save as Zip file"
It appears that the net area in RAM Connection is substracting two bolts instead of one. So the net area of the flange should be:
Ag = 70mm * 12mm = 840mm2
An= 840 - (22mm * 12mm) = 576mm2
Yet we are substracting two bolts.
I'm checking what's going on here: ticket number for your reference is 759597
Hi Enrique, ticket number 759597 as above, do you have any update info or result for the connection i sent? Thanks for your help in advance.
