Wrong Shear Capacity Calculation for Welded Built up Section as per IS 800-2007

1104.Model.std

STAAD.Pro CONNECT Edition - Version 22.07.00.160

If we assign a rolled section from the table and assign STP parameter as 2, then shear capacity is calculated correctly by taking the depth of web x thickness of web (dtw).

But when we assign a section from user table manager with wide flange then the shear capacity is calculated wrongly by considering the whole depth of beam x thickness of the web (htw).

The calculation is not as per clause 8.4 of IS800-2007 for welded built-up sections.

Staad file attached.

  • Hello,

Thanks for pointing out the issue. When we use user defined sections we need to create them in user table manager. By default it calculates shear area as D x Tw. Once this value is calculated, program use that value to design further. However, you can modify the value manually for the time being to get required output.

The shear area calculation is different for different codes and it is difficult to place a single equation that fits everything there. For this reason, we have stopped providing this value for the sections made through Section wizard. I think we need to do something similar here. Let me know if you have any suggestion on this.

  • My suggestion is to calculate both values of dtw and Dtw for all sections. Depending on the parameter of the welded section and the rolled sections, the design will be done accordingly by taking Dt or dt.
Request to implement as soon as possible to avoid under-designing any section.
