STAAD Reactions doesn't make sense

Hi,

I tried to model the below structure with gravity loads only in -Y direction, however I get reactions in the X and Z direction, in addition to the Y direction. I was expecting to see reactions in Y direction only since there are no loads in the other directions (X&Z). Anyone knows why would that happen?

  • Hello,

The screenshot is too small to read. But  I guess the X and Z reactions are equal and opposite in nature. SO, the total load is same. Now, when we are analyzing the structure we need to balance all the internal forces and moments. To do that we get those forces. If you draw the free body diagram of the structure and  try to solve it will be clear. The below simple example may help you to get the clue.
