PEDESTAL VS COLUMN DESIGN RCDC

I need Clarification about the difference of the results observed in these two models ,i have attached my two models

1.The first model i created Steel columns ,and below steel column i created a concrete column as observed on attached model ,the design results of these concrete columns are as shown on the attachment

2.The second model i created Steel columns ,and below steel column i didn't put concrete column,i designed my pedestal in RCDC ,the design results of these pedestals are as shown on the attachment

  • Hi,

It seems that both the files that are attached are same. request you to re-check and upload the staad file and RCDC file with Concrete pedestals modelled.

  • Hi,

Case 1 – Concrete Pedestal modelled below Steel column in STAAD vs

Case 2 - Concrete Pedestal is designed in RCDC.

In case 1, the forces transferred from Steel column to concrete pedestal is higher than that compared to Case 2 where RCDC reads the Beam end force of steel column and transfers it to RCC Pedestal that is created in RCDC.

How RCDC works for case 1 –

As the concrete pedestal is already modeled in the STAAD model and imported, RCDC reads the Top and Bottom force of each RCC Column or Pedestal and designs it as a Column as per the forces fetched from STAAD model.

How RCDC works for case 2 –

    1. RCDC will identify the steel column from STAAD model, fetch the beam end force from STAAD by considering the end that is connected with Support.
    2. The forces fetched from STAAD,
      1. Are at the top location of the RCC Pedestal
      2. Axial force for Bottom Location = Axial force at top of Pedestal + self-weight of Pedestal.
      3. Moment at Bottom Location = Moment at Top of Pedestal + Moment caused due to shear.

So, in both the cases that you are trying to compare above,

If Column Forces at Top location will be same in both the cases and also if the Pedestal size is same, then you will be able to get appx. same results for both cases in RCDC.

  • Then what i was asking is that, they all have same loading with same member sizes why do they give different results

  • Hi,

Please refer attached video. Note that the property of steel members in both the case is different.
