Ram connection - beam splice - analysis type

In Limcon for a beam splice you could previously choose the analysis type (simplified - [axial and Bending in flanges shear in webs], elastic - [an elastic distribution of forces between web and flanges] or plastic - [a plastic distribution of forces]. This is covered under section 3 of ASI design guide 13.

How do i do a similar calculation in RAM connection where i take the plastic distribution of forces and utilise the web plates for both moment and shear?

  • Hi Nic,

The approach we use is called the “Simplified method” which is in the page 8 of the Design Guide 13 – Splice connections of the Australian Steel Institute.

By this approach, the moment is taken by the beam flanges, the shear is taken by the web, and the axial in the beam is prorated to the areas of flanges and web.

We are planning to do an enhancement to add the options for elastic and plastic analysis of this set of forces for the design of the connections in the web and flanges this year.
