How to give the design parameter of Lx(lateral torsional buckling) For column member. In my case, The column height is 12m, Minor axis direction tied at each 3m. But major axis direction not tied. What is the Lx parameter value?
In that case you will have 2 parameters Ly and Lz, depending on the nature of your modele please find attached effective length parameters
Thank you for your reply. My doubt in the lateral torsional buckling(Lx). Not in the Effective length factor(Kx).
Hello,
Lateral torsional buckling is something prominent in beams and not seen much in columns. In lateral torsional buckling the member experience a lateral displacement along with torsional rotation or twisting. To restrict this mode engineers use lateral restraints just to ensure that it will prevent twisting and lateral displacement of teh compression flange. So, if in your case the bracing is capable of ensuring this (as per your engineering judgement) you can take LX as 3m, else you need to take it as 12m. Some literature and codes may have some guidelines on how to know if a member is capable of resisting the required lateral force to be taken as lateral restraint.
