RAM Connection - Column-Brace-Base Plate

Hello,

I am designing a braced frame base connection, with gusset plate welded the base plate and column flange. The column web is failing in shear.

1. The force calculated by RAM C seems very large compared to what my hand calcs show. Is there any documentation as to what RAM C is doing in calculating the shear demand at the column. see attached image.

2. RAM C seems to place the work point at the bottom of the base plate. Can the user change that to the top of the base plate or any distance above the base plate?

  • Hello Carlos,

Sorry, it has been a while, so I had to dig for those files I was testing with on my project connections.  Attached is the one that has the base plate /brace connection, called “Connection file”. See the case with angle equal 54 degrees.

    The biggest thing is that:
    1. At base plate connections, we seem to be using equations different from referenced ones in figure 4-22. Equations you are using seem to be coming from the chevron equations, sometimes and other times, from another type of connections in the DG 29.
    2. As for the chevron, I think I was using the file attached named “testing chevron”.  I don’t recall exactly what was the issue. Let discuss the base plate one, once it is resolved, I can look at the other one and see what the issues are still, if any.

P.S: I am on the latest version now.
