ACI 318-19 - 18.10.3.1 and 18.10.4.1

Hello,

I'm reaching out to see if RAM is implementing the shear amplification/overstrength factors of 318-19-18.10.3.1 and the reductions of 318-19-18.10.4.1 for tall walls.

I'm seeing Ve in the design summary and a reference to 18.10.4.1, and I also see that the manual acknowledges the new section. If it's being implemented, is there a report that shows a more in depth calculation?

  • We are checking this for special concrete shear walls.  There is some debate about the height of the walls to use. Here are some details noted for another case.

ACI 318-19 Concrete wall shear and boundary elements design require (among others) the use of 2 variables:

    a) Hwcs "height of entire structural wall"

    b) hw "height of entire wall from base to top, or clear height of wall segment or wall pier considered"

    Hw is used in:

    1. Sec. 18.10.2.2

    2. 18.10.2.4

    3. The alpha c factor used to calculate the in plane shear capacity for normal and special structural walls. Sec. 11.5.4.3, 11.5.4.4 and 18.10.4.1

    4. To apply the limits of reinforcement ratio pl according to Sec. 18.10.4.3

    5. 18.10.6.4

    Hwcs is used in:

    1. The calculation of the Overstrength shear amplification factor, which are used to amplify the earthquake design shear force (Ve). Sec. 18.10.3.1

    2. To define the need of Boundary elements in 18.10.6.2

  • Thanks for the confirmation and additional input Seth.
