Composite Beam Controlling Moment

I have a failing composite W14x22 beam that spans 25ft with an additional 5.25ft cantilever.  My controlling moment shows it as controlled by dead load only with a negative moment of 33.7k-ft:

The capacity provided (16.46k-ft) is for the entire length of the beam (25ft).  I have checked on to use inflection points for my unbraced lengths.  If I consider that unbraced length, my Lb = ~5ft and there should be a capacity of ~57k-ft.

Why is the program not taking into account inflection points for DL case only?

  • Check the RamSteelBeam.pdf program manual, section "9.11 Unbraced Length" for details on how the inflection point control works. In a nutshell, inflection point brace points are only considered if there is an additional brace point beyond the inflection point (and generally not recommended based on the current code guidance).  In your case it looks like the program is not considering this for the pre-composite condition only. You can manually assign a brace point in Modeler if you want to override things.
