Bolted beam Splice connection

Hi I'm using RAM cnnection, version 13 update 6. I need to check a splice connection but in this version i could only see standard sections to be used. Is there any updated version where we can input custom beam sizes, plate sizes and bolt coordinates.? To model a splice connection that's something like this

Thanks & Regards

  • 1) Where do you see LHS and RHS paremeters? Could you please illustrate it with a screenshot?
    2) Only fillet weld option is available in the beam splice end plate connections.
    3) Deselect 'Design as moment end plate' and select 'Bolts on four sides' options as shown below.

    4) Please send us the model.
    5) Add RAM Connection file into an archive (i.e. Zip) and attach that archive.
    6) I would recommend you to use the most recent RAM Connection version were connection templates which are suitable for the created joint are selected automatically:

  • 1) Here's the screenshot for LHS and RHS member definition and setback. Although during design, I didnt see setback option or the lengths. By changing the thickness of the end plate the lengths got changed automatically in the graphics. I gave different lengths input and it didnt make any difference. its clear these parameters - setback and lengths have no impact

    2) There is no weld strength check?

    3) I could model bolts on four sides by selecting Assign->Basic/Smart Connection->EP BS Rectangular.

    • Now the splice joint behaves as an axial connection and not a moment connection as explained in the tutorials. Which is not the real case.
    • What's the difference between basic and smart connection as per the program?
    • There is no plate bearing failure check due to shear load applied when behave as an axial connection.

    4) File uploaded for your reference

    5) I have downloaded the latest version V13.9 and will check in that too. But still would like you to share some insights how to use current version V13.6 to model a moment connection splice joint.

  • Even in the V13.9, selecting moment end plate offers provision of 4 or 8 bolts. not able to assign custom bolt configuration. Deselecting "design as moment end plate" provides bolts on four sides option but that is not the ideal analysis as it would consider the section to be axially loaded only and there would be no moment transfer to the connection. Please look into this.
