RAM Connection Custom Load Combinations

Hello,

I have created generated and custom load combinations in RAM structural steel frame module.  When I send the model to RAM Connection the generated load combinations and only the first custom load combination transfers in.  I have the "use" box checked on all.  How do I get all my custom load combinations into RAM Connection?  Is there a way to edit load combinations within RAM Connection? (Not the stand alone version)

Thank you,

Brian

  • In my experience, the key to keeping the Ram Connection load combinations for design constant is to make sure to always analyze the same set of load cases in Ram Frame analysis mode prior to design (it does not have to be "all", but consistent), and to always make sure to get into Ram Frame Steel mode and confirm load combos before going into Ram Connection. If you are using seismic provisions, then also make sure to go into that mode and confirm load combos also.

I have a problem to check the C59 connection you noted above because it's a custom shape that I don't yet have in my Ram Connection tables. I'll check another joint or try a simple test for the anchor demand question.  I assume the location of the anchors in not changing when you change the diameters.

  • Hi Seth,

    Thanks for reaching out.
    I’ve uploaded my model.
    I’m using 17.04.01.07 SES
    Ram Connection: v13 Update 8 (13.8.0.246)

Looking back through some of the moment loads they are matching up now.  Not sure what was going on before…maybe some load combinations were not checked in RAM Connection…sometimes they uncheck on their own.

Last unsolved question is how the anchor bolt diameter relates to demand? Check out C59.  At 2” diameter rod, group breakout in tension demand is 168.15k and at 1.5” diameter rod the demand drops to 137.40k.  Shouldn’t the demand stay the same? See attached screenshots for reference.  I believe this is true for most if not all conditions.

  • You mentioned attaching a file above, but there were no files in the post thread or on our Sharefile site. Let's start by getting the file. You can use this link Share File - https://bentley.sharefile.com/r-r5dae662b0e684bc08861a8394a78f447 It would also be good to confirm your version of RAM SS and RAM Connection. The original issue about load combinations is usually because something changed and there was not a green light or up to date status for both Ram Frame Analysis and Ram Frame Steel design mode(s).

  • Hello,

I’m wondering if you’ve had a chance to look into the moment discrepancy between RAM Steel Frame and RAM Connection?
Do you use Microsoft Teams?  Perhaps we could do a screen share?

    Thank you,
    Brian

  • Hello,

Just filling you in…when I opened my model on Monday the load combinations did come in, must of just needed some time/a restart.

Still wondering about the loads and the anchors.

    Thank you,
    Brian
