This is a very hard question to answer as there is no specific rule for that. You can use this method as well but the question here will be the value of modulus subgrade. Instead of that you can use some spring support too but gain the value of spring constant you need to find out.

A method could be using P/X as spring constant where, P is the maximum allowable load and Z is the allowable deflection of that supporting beam. But this will be subjected to some kind of R&D and you may study some paper if available to get better modelling methods.

RE: Foundation-Plate Mat Support versus Plate Pin Supports

I see. So that's where the problem is coming from. Thank you for such answer!

I would like to add a follow up question. What if the base plates are attached to a Steel I-beam, is the plate mat support still applicable? If not, what support specification is recommended for such case? I am self-studying for this case.

Thank you for your prompt response! Well appreciated!

RE: Foundation-Plate Mat Support versus Plate Pin Supports

Thanks for sharing the file. Here I think the value of subgrade modulus is creating the problem. You have used 200 kN/m2/m value which is kind of soft support and hence may be the displacement is so high the program is unable to find a solution. I would request you to review that part and use a higher value if possible. When as a trial I use 500 instead of 200 the file run without any error. One more point is that you have defined compression only springs which is causing some more issues in the model. If you change it to none most of the warnings will be solved.

I have uploaded two models, same specification and stuff, but only differ in the assigned support. One has nodal pin support while the other has the Plate Support command, which always leads to an error, mentioned in the first post.

Any review or suggestion would be appreciated!
