Why is the software calculating the web weld length as approximately half of what it is supposed to be?
My connection entails a W250x58 welded to an end plate. The design code is CSA S16-14 which uses some calculations from AISC DG16.
I would expect the web weld length of just one side to be calculated as follows:
Lw = D - 2tf - 2Rf (Depth of beam - 2 x flange thickness - 2 x Flange root radius) = 252mm - (2 x 13.5mm) - (2 x 19mm) = 187mm
The software is using about half that length (96 mm). I'm not sure if I am missing something. Please see pic below:
Hello Dhirtan and Mohamed, We are using several recommendations from the AISC DG16 and AISC DG4 for this connection. One of the recommendations comes from AISC DG4 as you can see below, the AISC suggest to use half beam depth in the beam compression flange. But clarifies that this assumption is based only on engineering judgment and there is no references to back the assumption. If this is causing issues in your designs, we can discuss to include an enhancement.
