section wizard

Hello,

If i am assigning the property of section wizard say four angles connected, behaving as square in plan then is it possible to design that particular element as per the given design codes?

  • Most codes do not have explicit rules for designing built-up sections like the angle arrangement you mention. In STAAD, you can design only those shapes for which the code has explicit rules for design. The 4-angle section is not among them.

Using Section Wizard, try to find an equivalent section like a square tube. Then, designing that tube should be approximately close to the 4-angle section you want to design.

  • From Section Wizard, you can export the section as prismatic member which will create a file for you in which the member properties like Area, Moments of Inertia, etc are noted. You can open this file from STAAD and add this property. This will create a generic section that mimics the properties of the built-up section.

Please note that even if you design the section using STAAD, you have to design the lacing or batten that you plan to provide separately as these will not be designed by STAAD...

Lacings and batterns Only for double-channel sections (back to back or toe to toe) can be designed by STAAD, at least as far as IS Codes is concerned
