Is there a simple way to split walls in RAM SS?
I keep getting the following error:
"Wall #XX has another Wall framing into its interior on Layout Type XXXXX.
Wall coordinates ( ft ) (XX.XXXX,XX.XXXX), (XX.XXXX,XX.XXXX)
Frame-in Wall coordinates ( ft ) (XX.XXXX,XX.XXXX), (XX.XXXX,XX.XXXX)
User Action: Split wall into separate elements wherever this occurs"
Happens whenever I draw in a new wall and have it frame into another wall between its ends. Goes away once I delete the wall being framed in to and redraw as two walls with ends at the intersection of the wall framing in and the previous walls.
Is there an easier way to split a wall once it's drawn, instead of just deleting and redrawing as two walls?
Or another way to get this error to stop happening? Maybe have drawn in walls snap to wall faces rather than centers?
Thanks.
There isn't a tool to split walls. You could use the Layout – Wall – Move command to move one end, but that might mess up any framing that is supported by the wall.
Intersecting walls should always meet at a end node and never the interior of the wall panel. This is required so the program can determine the proper tributary loading and mesh lateral walls. The only way to avoid splitting the wall is to stop one wall short of the other so they don't actually intersect. Then, you can fill in the gap with a dummy beam.
Hi Eric,
Just want to follow up on how the split walls could potentially affect the program's way of calculating the fundamental period. If I split a shear wall up to satisfy the framing error like what you guys discussed above, does that have any ramification on how the program calculate the "T" for seismic analysis?
Essentially I want to know if the program will calculate a different "T" value if a single wall element is split into two wall elements.
Thank you
Splitting a wall into parts does not fundamentally affect the total stiffness. The segments still interact where they connect. It might affect the meshing and have some small impact on calculated results.
Modeling the walls with a separation fundamentally changes the behavior. See: RAMSS Walls FAQ
Thank you Seth!
