how can l solve the problem?

when l run the design of beam, the warning information is indicated below,

Member 1: Failed tension calculations for hogging at 0.000 m. Design not possible.
Member 2: Failed tension calculations for hogging at 0.000 m. Design not possible.

who can help me expain the reason?

thanks

  • Hi,

STAAD Pro is very easy software to learn & use. But you must be familier in structural design standards.

To become familier in STAAD use tutorials & get support from bentley.

For shallow foundation design you can use STAAD foundation software.

  • hi vivekshine,

As for the floor in concrete frame and steel frame, which type of element (surface, plate or solid, as l know that the surface is usually appicable to shear wall, and plate to floor, but, in fact, l do not know how to distinguish the identifiation and difference in different situatioin.) shoul be applied, and can you tell me some difference between them, and how to mesh for both element generally, beacuse l find out that some different output result from varies setting in same load and same structure.

    for example:

    1. for each story, a whole surface applied or plate for each space divided by beam, which one is better, what is the difference for them in the analysis?

  • Hello Kazeem

There are 2 modes by which design can be done in Staad, the batch mode and the RC Designer mode.  The batch mode is the normal mode where the analysis and design is done. The RC Designer mode is specially for concrete design purpose and for BS 8110 it is recommended to use the RC Design module. Kindly see the attached screenshot.

Also, I have used BS8110 for the batch mode , and the corresponding model is also attached.

A hogging moment of nearly 420 KNm is developed at the start of the beam , the depth provided 300mm is not sufficient for it . As you increase the depth ( or width , but preferably the depth ), the design is carried without any such warning messages.

As you are new to Staad, if you have any problems with the analysis and design of your models, kindly create   a Service Ticket and Bentley Technical Support will help you.

    Thanks

  • very kind of you,  vivekshine,

in fact, bs 8110 is already replaced by BS EN, so in case the output was refused by checker beacuse of BS code should be updated, what should l do?

Repeat load is applied in the updated model (concrete frame-1), l wonder when (what situation) should consider this load case? usually, what case is applicable to?

    thank you so much.
