Moving Load Generation

Hi,

I am using STAAD to model wheel loads for the first time and having a little bit of trouble.  My model has W8x28 spaced at 5' on center and has L3x3x3/8 diagonals between them.  Two W24s supports the W8x28s.  The W8x28 support grating which the vehicle drives on.  When I set up the moving load, it applies it to both the angles and the W8x28.  How do I program STAAD so that the load is only transferred to the W8x28s?

  • You can do it using 2 methods.

Method 1 : Using INACTIVE MEMBER. STAAD does not generate moving loads on inactivated members.

You will need to use the following sequence.

Use the INACTIVE MEMBER command to inactivate the angle diagonals.

    Specify the moving load commands.

    PERFORM ANALYSIS followed by CHANGE

Specify the rest of your load cases. Specify load combinations to combine those cases with generated moving load cases.

    PERFORM ANALYSIS followed by CHANGE

    Method 2 :Using MASTER SLAVE

Specify the elevation of the nodes of the ends of the diagonals to be a couple of inches below that of the W24s or W8s. Using master slave RIGID, link those nodes to those of the W24's or W8s.

This sets the diagonals to be below the rest of the deck, so, no load should be directly generated on them.
