Modeler not installed or is in use

A user with RAM Structural System 12 recently upgraded his computer to Windows 7. However, since doing so, he encounters an error when attempting to open RAM Modeler. The error states that Modeler is not installed or is in use.

  • As a troubleshooting step, please open RAM Structural System, and select Tip of the Day from the Help menu. Does the computer encounter problems finding the tip file, too? This will help determine whether the RamIS configuration settings file is set up properly.

  • The user indicated that the following error occurs when attempting to open the Tip of the Day:
"Tips file does not exist in the prescribed directory"

This confirms that the program is failing to find the directories specified in the RamIS configuration settings file. Please perform the following steps to resolve the issue:

    1. For installations of RAM Structural System prior to 14.02, please navigate to C:\Windows, and open RamIS.ini.
    2. Locate the [Directories] section near the top.
    3. Verify that the directory paths exist. On a 64-bit operating system, specifically ensure that the paths are using Program Files (x86) instead of Program Files.
    4. Save changes, and close RamIS.ini.

Please confirm whether the Tip of the Day and RAM Modeler open now.

  • I did as your forum response suggested.  The paths in the RamIS.ini file are to Program Files (x86).  It did not resolve the issue.

RAM Structural System 14.0 and earlier can encounter permissions-related issues with their default configuration when running under Windows Vista/7/8 as a normal user. Two options exist to resolve the issue. The first option is recommended simply because it is the easiest to implement.

Option 1: Run the program as an administrator.

Configure the program to run as an administrator every time it is opened. This will provide full access to any folders and files that need to be modified. To do this, perform the following steps:

    1. Right-click on the desktop shortcut for RAM Structural System, and select Properties from the contextual menu.
    2. Click the Compatibility tab in the window that appears.
    3. Enable the checkbox labeled "Run this program as an administrator."
    4. Click OK to save changes.

Option 2: Adjust the folder permissions to allow full control.

Navigate to the location of the Working folder. In RAM Structural System 14.0 and earlier, the default location on a 64-bit operating system is:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley\Engineering\RAM Structural System\Data

Adjust the permissions on the Working folder located here by performing the following steps:

    1. Right-click on the Working folder, and select Properties from the contextual menu.
    2. Click on the Security tab in the window that appears.
    3. Click the Edit button.
    4. Select your name in the top list, or click the Add button if it is not present.
    5. Then, with your name selected, enable Full Control in the bottom list.
    6. Click OK to save changes.

Please confirm whether you can access RAM Modeler after implementing one of the options above.

  • Option 1 did work.  The tip of the day and the modeler opened.

    Thanks very much.
