How Staad Pro. can do the construction stage analysis?

Hi,

I have two stages of construction analysis(attached) need to be solved. I am using Staad.Pro V8i for structural analysis. How can I solve this issue by using Staad.Pro?

Thanks,

Pisit

  • At present direct staged analysis can’t be performed in STAAD.Pro. But, you can try an alternate process. You can create multiple structure in a single STAAD file. You can create model required for progressive construction with different sets of loading. The model has to be created at a distance apart. Eventhough, the different models are present in a file, STAAD.Pro is capable of analysing these models without any problem. In case of simple model, Staged Construction Analysis can be done by modeling the final structure and using INACTIVE members to eliminate parts
    to simulate the individual stages.

There has been an enhancement request logged in our internal system for providing staged construction facility with issue ID 3573.

  • To a certain extent, stage construction analysis can be done by modeling the final structure and using INACTIVE MEMBERS to eliminate parts to simulate the individual stages.

You can find an application on INACTIVE MEMBERS in example problem 4 in the Application Examples section of the program documentation.

  • I understand that we can turn on/turn off members(using INACTIVE command) or use multi-structures in single  model as well but that is not the real staged construction analysis. Please see my attachment which was explained itself that 2nd stage load is applied point load after structure has been deformed due to 1st stage(construction completion).

I would like see an alternative choice whether we can create macro to get the nodal displacements from 1st stage and place it into deformation matrix in 2nd stage or not?

  • Your example does not seem to show stage construction. You are asking for a loading pattern to be added onto a model that has been deformed by a differnt laoding pattern. That is basically a load combination. That maeans creatindg a load combination. However, if you are concerned that the combined loading of both the stages may result in excessive displacements, then you should create a new load primary load case and use the REPEAT LOAD command, then use the PDELTA or NONLINEAR analysis.

The concept of STAGE CONSTRUCTION is when there is where part of the model is subject to a loading pattern and additional geometry is added and subject to a secondary load pattern, the effects of both are then combined to produce a final result.

  • This is a stage construction. I was carrying out the analysis of an underground metro structure using repeat loads and nonlinear analysis to reflect soil-structure interactions as attached photo.

There will be a high rise building to be constructed in about ten years after on top of this structure and off course connecting to this structure. I have heard some commercial analysis software in the market could do the stage construction analysis.
