Reduced Moment Capacity of the EN1993:1:1-2005

Does Staad account for the reduced moment capacity when SF exceed the 0.5 SR (as per 6.2.8), i found some anomaly with it. help please.

  • There is a validation example on this clause (6.2.8) of the Eurocode:

    communities.bentley.com/.../12408.validation-problem-on-reduced-moment-capacity-as-per-cl6-2-8-of-en-1993-1-1-2005.aspx

Please go through it and let me know the anomaly that you have come across.

  • Hi!

I don't really understand why in some sections, the reduction moment is not applied. Please, see text attached.

It seems that in sections Class 3 this reduction is not applied. Is not applied by this reason?? Why??

Furthermore, in EC3-1-5:2006 Ch 7.1 this reduction is also applied.

    Thanks!

  • Our hand calculations ds not match with STAAD results as well, so we have contacted the development team for the clarification. We will get back to you as soon as we have some more comments on this.

  • We have investigated this issue in details. It is found that this is indeed a problem but luckily for only class 3 sections. We will log in a bug track on this and will try to correct this issue in the forthcoming version.

  • Thanks for your answer.

To solve this unsafe situation in the recent version, what did you reccomend?
Force check class 3 beams (HEA260, HEA280 and HEA300) with the clause 6.2.1 (5) with design parameter TOR=1?

    Thanks
  • Hi all,

I hope everyone party to this conversation are still active members.

I have relatively similar problem. I have explained it here.

I am trying to assess the capacity of the plate girder bridge. while reading results I came across some problem, where STAAD.pro calculates reduced moment capacity of few members as ZERO. I have checked manually it shudnt happen. But for similar members which are not much loaded it does calculate reduced moment capacity. Strange.

Memebrs are 141, 144 and 147 for which reduced moment capacity is zero. but similar members such as 145, 146 etc are having right values. Also , as per Cl. 6.8.2.1 of EC3-1-1 reduction in moment capacity shudnt be applied if Ved < 0.5 Vplrd. But in this case it seems to be calculating wrongly. Can you let me know what are the issues?

  • The results are not correct because the shear areas in the UC203x203x46TC.upt file are provided as 0. Please calculate the shear area for this section manually and enter it directly into that UPT file instead of 0.0000 values which are currently entered. You may open the UPT file with the Notepad. The results should be reasonable now.
