Steel Composite Design for Positive Moment

Hi All,

Is it possible in STAAD Pro. to design a steel composite beam with positive moment as what may happen on continuous span? I got a warning when checking a beam that my beam has positive moment which have not designed for.

Is there any solution for this?

Thank you

  • As of now, STAAD.Pro can handle positive moments in the design of composite beams for code check as per the AISC 9th edition code only ( CODE AISC ). For that code, if the critical section is at a location that has the concrete in tension, it designs the section as a non composite section. For the LRFD 3rd edition implementation ( CODE LRFD ), the software ignores the positive moments while carrying out the composite beam design and prints a warning message, as you mentioned.

  • Hi Sye,

Thank you for your usual replies and guidance.

I was wondering if this issue has been resolved? I can see the question was in 2014 and I'm facing this issue till now. Please advise if there is a recent LRFD code that design positive moment along with the composite section.

One more point I also find odd in the composite design in staad, When I apply composite deck slab, it only defines the beams prependicular to the rid as composite , what about the beams parallel to the rib, why do we have to define as composite manual? or am I missing something? Thank you in avdance.
