Changes after Bentley’s Acquisition of ADINA R&D

ADINA R&D was acquired by Bentley Systems (Bentley) in April 2022. The purpose of this wiki is to inform you of the timeline of events and changes you can expect as part of Bentley for the remainder of the year.

In the coming weeks, we plan to release a new version of ADINA under Bentley’s SELECT licensing program that offers access to some features you would have previously needed to purchase separately. Going forward, ADINA software will no longer be available through the ADINA website. Instead, you will need to download all new releases from the Bentley Software Downloads Center. We strongly encourage you to sign up for SELECT and download the newest version of your software to remain current.

There are many benefits to moving to this newer version of the software as quickly as possible, including:

    • The ability to utilize unlimited processing cores (threads) while running ADINA on a desktop, even if you did not purchase this option in the past. This means there will no longer be an additional fee to utilize more than four processing cores, as was the case with ADINA R&D.
    • If you are on a Bentley subscription, you will have access to all pre- and post-processor interfaces (apart from Parasolids) that required a separate license in the past.
    • If you are on a Bentley subscription, you will be able to use the software on multiple machines using a floating license with no extra fee.

What does this mean for my existing ADINA maintenance contract?

Bentley’s maintenance program is known as SELECT. Your annual SELECT renewal quote will be sent 90 days in advance of your maintenance expiration, with the details of the licenses you now own. Signing up for SELECT will allow you to access the new release of ADINA on Bentley Software Downloads. Instructions on how to download, install, and configure the software and licensing will be provided to you. Some important additional benefits of Bentley’s SELECT program are as follows:

    • Access to timely software updates and new releases
    • World class technical support and access to quality learning resources at your fingertips
    • Annual Portfolio Balancing, to exchange perpetual licenses once a year for other titles

What happens if I do not sign onto SELECT?

You will continue to have access to the last version of the software released through ADINA R&D. This is version 9.8.2. However, you will not have access to any additional releases. Further, you will not have access to any of the SELECT benefits described above, which includes technical support, floating licenses, and pre/post processor interoperability as described in the commercial changes section below.

Can I sign onto SELECT prior to my scheduled renewal date?

Yes. You may sign up for SELECT right away and begin taking advantage of its benefits. To do this, please contact BAC@bentley.com.

What commercial change is Bentley making to ADINA?

    • Under ADINA R&D, the software was offered in about eight different options, depending on whether the user wanted access to structures, thermal, fluids, fluid/structure interaction, and electromagnetism. While we still plan to offer multiple options, they will be simplified. We will offer three options: ADINA, ADINA Advanced, and ADINA Ultimate.
      • ADINA includes the ADINA AUI and ADINA Structures functionality.
      • ADINA Advanced combines the standard ADINA package with ADINA Thermal and Thermo-mechanical coupling (TMC).
      • ADINA Ultimate includes all ADINA functionality. It combines the ADINA Advanced package with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI), Electromagnetics (EM), and remaining Multiphysics coupled analysis types.
      • ADINA Parasolid Modeler is available separately for interoperability with Parasolid-based CAD programs.
    • No fee for pre/post processor interoperability, other than Parasolid, while on SELECT maintenance. These CAD Interfaces cannot be purchased separately.
    • Floating license using Bentley’s Subscription Entitlement Service (SES) is standard with all options.
    • No license-based limits on the number of cores an individual can use on a desktop.

In general, Bentley’s three tiers of ADINA described above are priced consistently with the previous ADINA price associated with the respective functionality. For more on this see ADINA Licensing and Tiers

Does Bentley offer the same license and lease options that ADINA R&D did?

Bentley has several commercial programs to choose from. A Bentley perpetual license is very similar to ADINA’s paid-up license. For leases, Bentley offers a Virtuoso subscription, which is an annual subscription to the software ideal for both short and long-term use. Virtuoso subscriptions will be available for purchase at https://virtuosity.bentley.com/product/adina/.

How do these changes impact my ADINA subscriptions?

    A: Perpetual licenses maintenance

As explained above, your annual SELECT renewal quote will be sent 90 days in advance of your maintenance expiration, with the details of the licenses you now own.

    B: Leased licenses

Any leases you were under contract for through ADINA R&D will not be renewed as with paid-up licenses. A 12-month subscription through Virtuosity can be purchased at https://virtuosity.bentley.com/. A Virtuosity sales representative will contact you in advance of your ADINA lease expiration date.

Who can I contact with additional questions?

You may continue using the communication channels you are familiar with through ADINA R&D. Otherwise, please contact Julia.Hayes@bentley.com with any sales-related questions you have. If you purchase your software through an ADINA distributor, continue communicating with them directly.
