Program Error for Deflection Checks in Spans with Multiple Span Segments

Problem Description

When spans are modeled with a series of segmented span segments and the orientations of the cross sections within the segments vary (see 3-3 and 3-3(2) in the image below), the issues outlined below may occur during the deflection check calculations.

  1. When evaluating deflection check limits assigned to span segments, RAM Concept is designed to calculate deflections at stations along the span segment spine that match the design strip cross section locations. Refer to the RAM Concept Manual for more information. When multiple span segments are defined with different skew angles, RAM Concept incorrectly locations the stations used for the deflection check and those stations do not coincide with the cross section locations.

  2. The fatal error below may occur when the deflection checks are processed. This error occurs because the span ratios are calculated incorrectly, and RAM Concept attempts to determine deflections at points within slab elements that are no longer attached to span segment.

Solution

A fix for this issue is included in RAM Concept v23.00.00.

The fatal program error can be avoided in v08.04.00 using one of the following work arounds:

  1. Disable the deflection checks assigned to affected span segments. Then, model a deflection check line to check deflection limits.
  2. Change the skew angle so that the cross sections within each span segment have the same orientation along the entire span.
