Colleague Derricke Gray Gets into the Details of Civil Models and Plan Sets at the Bentley LEARNing Conference

A very popular lecture during all three LEARNing Conferences, Derricke Gray’s presentation today on best practices when generating final plan sets from from civil models is chock full of useful information for the experienced civil designer/project manager. In 45 minutes he covered a wide variety of the workflow details involved in creating plan & profile sheets from the traditional civil product geometry and element properties.

Speaking to a filled room, Derricke pointed out right away that under the Civil model the sheet production remains the same using legacy tools from SELECTseries 2, an important point for existing users.

Manual Method
Continuing, Derricke described the export options for 3D geometry: Manual and Auto. He stated “If I had to choose a single method, it would be Manual. It avoids possible conflicts with naming. The exception is GEOPAK where if you maintain auto-annotate then you must use Auto Export”.

Derricke asked for a count of hands of how many attendees still manually prepare sheets. He was a bit surprised at the number (lots).  He pointed out there are plenty of tools in Civil to help make this process easier, obviously a topic for another day.

From this start, the list of topics was impressive:

  • Drawing Profiles
  • Proposed/Existing Terrain
  • Output Settings
  • Alternate Surfaces
  • Cross Sections
  • 3D Model Referencing
  • Templates
  • Tons of Annotation
  • Computations

… the list goes on!

Towards the end of the presentation, Derricke touched on Acute3D, Bentley’s recent acquisition (“Smart3D” is the product name developed by Acute3D). Smart3D provides the ability to use collections of digital photographs to generate accurate 3D models without the usual strictness of a full-on site survey. Several attendees have expressed interest Acute3D/Smart3D during the conferences thus I found Derricke’s brief overview useful. We can expect great things from this.

One notable tip from Derricke:

Use AccuSnap setting to adjust the context menus. You can turn them off, set the delay time from 1,2,3 or more seconds

Given the fast pace of this lecture, again, I highly recommend revisiting this presentation by reviewing the on-demand course which can be found in the LEARNing Conference 2015 - OpenRoads Technology Lectures Learning Path.
