At this moment it is not possible to save a Bentley civil model as an IFC file. I see this as a missing link between good co-operation between the building and Civil industry.
At this moment there are some developments going on at the IFC-world. Alignment information for example is added in the newest version of this file format ( http://iug.buildingsmart.org/resources/itm-and-iug-meetings-2013-munich/infra-room/ifc-alignment-model-an-extension-to-ifc-for-infra/view ).
Is this a good moment for Bentley to support this file format in their feature products?
Regards Louis
could you tell us what IFC is?

Hi Nico,
What me is told is that the ifc-file-format was meant to be as a platform neutral standard for the exchange of 3D models with data between software (not a read-only i-model) (BIM). At this moment the file format is especially used at building applications to cooperate between different platforms. MicroStation and the Bentley Civil applications has a function to import IFC models, but an export function is missing.

have you asked to see if an enhancement request has been created for this?
IFC is ment to be an open file standard used to exchange engineering (including CAD) and business data. It is listed at the famous BIM triangle. In some countries, I am sure about Finland, it would be the only file format to deliver data on public works founded by federal budget.
I don't believe IFC is capable to handle huge linear objects. It works fine with buildings or plants and Microstation is capable to reference, open and I guess edit IFC files (not the business data but graphic but here I may be wrong). However the link to document that Louis posted here sounds very promising.
You can publish IFC with Bentley software just take a look at AECOsim or ask at building forum here at communities.bentley.com. But still I don't believe IFC is ready for linear infrastructure.

Hi Adam,
Precisely, I've got the idea that the developers of the ifc format are adjusting the format on a way that civil products can also handle it.
Where can I ask for this?
One of the things I like at Bentley, is that a user you can discuss things till developers level.
Thanks Louis
