OpenRoads (Geopak) Edit Horizontal Alignment

I would like to edit an alignment that has an active profile and I am having trouble understanding why I cannot edit a specific way.

First screen shot shows original alignment (of course this alignment extends further north).

Second screen shot shows complex element I want to replace beginning of original alignment with.

So essentially the beginning of the alignment will be shorter.  I tried to use the Complex Redefine.  I am allowed to select original alignment but when prompted to select complex element to redefine I get the circle with the line thru it and a prompt of Invalid Geometry type.

I know that the replacement complex element is valid as I can break the original alignment and then use the Complex By Elements command to join the replacement complex element with the rest of the now broken original alignment.  But this is not desired because I cannot use the original alignment name which is what my corridor is currently using.  The profile is associated to this new alignment but again my corridor is associated to the original alignment name.

I would like to keep original alignment intact and insert or replace the replacement alignment so as to keep the original alignment name which will not affect my corridor.  Anyone?

TIA

Sean

  • In order to use the complex redefine tool your redefining complex must have sub-components that are related the to original complex.  This mean that the redefining base elements are geometry (lines or arcs) that are construed to/from the BASE elements of the original complex.

  • Sean Keene,  I have the similar problem caused by my Redefining Complex failing to tie in the original tangentially.  I guess yours is caused by your beginning point changed.

  • It's been two and a half years but what the heck... perhaps my experiences can be of help.

I have found that Complex Redefine works only in specific circumstances. If geometry (used for the edit) is generated in between the first and last elements of an existing complex alignment, it tends to work fairly predictably. The complex geometry to be used to redefine the current complex alignment can be generated from geometry elements, or "plain" MicroStation elements. But they key is the first and last element of the current complex geometry cannot be changed. However, I have failed every time I try to use Complex Redefine to make a change to a complex alignment involving the first or last element of the complex geometry. It will not work. The complex geometry used to make a redefinition involving a start or end element will not be able to be selected - instead, OpenRoads Designer will show and international "no" symbol and will not allow the geometry to be selected, instead giving the error of "Invalid Geometry Type":

I have also found that the Geometry Builder Edit command can make changes to an existing complex alignment that *does* involve the start or end element. It is a tool that takes some getting used to, but it can turn the trick in this situation. It helps greatly to draw out in "regular" MicroStation elements for what one is trying to redefine.

All that said, this is another method that can operate directly on an existing complex geometry to make most any edit you can think of - but at least one of the original elements needs to remains so the relationships, names, rules, and such are maintained. I hope this helps...
