GEOAPK-UNITS OF RESOLUTION

Hello,

I am using Power Geopak V8i SS2.

I just learned about the Units of Resolution inside the Working Units dialog as advanced settings.  I have to ask, why would I want to change these settings if it changes the geometry in the design file.

  • Hi

You should NEVER modify the advanced Resolution setting if elements have been drawn or referenced to a DGN . Typically Resolution would be set in a seed file. when working with a civil design it is strongly suggested that resolution units (i.e. metric, feet, survey feet) match the design file linear units. An advanced Resolution of 1000 per foot would me more than adequate for a civil design.

Resolution as defined under the advanced settings is a leftover setting from a time prior to an unlimited design plane (V7). The setting increased accuracy by defining more positional units. As accuracy increased the working are of the design plane decreased. i.e. someone design a gear for a swiss watch requires a great deal of precision and would not need a large design plane. However someone mapping a State road system would require a larger design plane and could sacrifice precision.
