"Bad file (.tiw file) opened. Perhaps an I/O error!"

When trying to import an FWD file into a blank DGN, I get the following error:

"Bad file (.tiw file) opened. Perhaps an I/O error!"

It gives me a box to click OK, and then says the FWD failed to import. I am trying to import the FWD by going to File>Power InRoads Import>Survey Data> and then selecting the FWD file.

Any ideas on why I would be getting this notice? I am fairly new with InRoads, so I may have missed a step or something.

  • Sometimes, an XIN lists a TIW setting for survey, but the TIW file listed in the xin does not exist where it says it does. This can happen when one user makes a TIW file but stores it locally, while using a shared XIN file. Or the path stored in the XIN file was from an earlier version and the current version is installed somewhere else.
To fully diagnose this, you would want to open the XIN file in some type of XML aware editor and browse to the TIW section to see what the supposed path and filename its looking for. Then you can search your PC for that TIW to see if it exists but is now in a new location.
One more thing: If you only need to open an FWD, that is done using the file > open menu. Generally, you only import FWD files if you are trying to append one FWD to another.

  • The FWD is the default extension for a survey file in InRoads Survey. All you should need to do is to go to File > Open and select the file.

One way to check is to open the FWD file in Notepad and it should look something like this:

    Linear Units = US Feet
    Angular Units = Degrees
    Direction Units = North Azimuth
Horz. Obs. Units = Right Face
    Vert. Obs. Units = Zenith
    Slope Distance Scale = 1.00

The Import>Survey Data command is used for imported electronic note book files like RW5's etc.

  • Looks like I just needed the simple answer... Just open the file instead of importing. Shows how much I know about InRoads! Thanks for the help!
