Too many elements for civil rule creation - impacts

Question

When importing an alignment with General Geometry Import, from a .gpk, one of my advanced users is getting a message stating "Horzontal contains too many elements for civil rule creation." What does this mean and what are the impacts?

Hello Joe, 
 You can make a copy of the element with no civil rules applied. For this, select 'Horizontal Geometry > Copy Element' and check mark the option 'Do not Copy Rules'.

Okay, while import you may consider unchecking the option 'Create Civil Rules'

When you get a message like "Too many elements..." for horizontal and / or vertical it will not import those geometries period. This check is independent of the design rule checks. 
 
In the ..\Bentley\WorkSpace\Projects\Examples\Bentley-Civil-Imperial.pcf you will find the following lines: 
 
	#---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 
	# Allows the user to relax the number of adjacent linear elements. 
	# If this is set to false or undefined then the maximum number of adjacent lines is 20. 
	# To remove the limit, set to 1. Set to 0 to maintain limits. 
	# CIVIL_RELAX_NUMBER_OF_LINEARS = 1 
	# Allows the user to relax the total number of elements (i.e. lines + arcs). 
	# If this is set to false or undefined then the maximum number of total elements is 250. 
	# To remove the limit, set to 1. Set to 0 to maintain limits. 
	# CIVIL_RELAX_NUMBER_OF_ELEMENTS_FOR_RULES = 1 
	# CIVIL_RELAX_NUMBER_OF_ELEMENTS_ON_IMPORT = 1 
 
You want to uncomment CIVIL_RELAX_NUMBER_OF_ELEMENTS_ON_IMPORT to get around the 1000 element limit.
