Profile by Variable Slope from Element Tool - Slope Style Extension

What is the function of the Variable Slope from Element Tool when the Slope Style is selected to be Extension?  When you go through the prompts I get to a prompt which asks "locate element to define slope", what type of element is it looking for?

  • My first thought is that the only requirement is that both elements must have a profile. In testing this before I answered your original question, I tried 2 scenarios: 1.) I drew two new linear elements at known offsets and created new profiles for each so I could easily check the elevations of the new 3rd profile, and 2.) I selected an Edge of Pavement and Edge of Shoulder complex element from a corridor, and projected their slope to a new linear geometry I created.

If you have a case where two elements have profiles, but do not allow you to select it, please attach the DGN as an example for us to troubleshoot. Obviously the help documents doesn't describe this option yet, so I'd like to record possible limitation to the command as we find them.

  • Wesley,

I don't know what your background is, but if inroads, the tool do similar job to vertical gore tool in roadway designer.

Simple examples of application of the tool are merge/diverge areas. Especially, when you merge/diverge on curves or spirals. You may want to project main carriageway slope onto slip road alignment. In such case, your references would be inside and outside edge of pavement.

However, be careful with this tool and check the results. Sometimes it doesn't work as its supposed to. I logged few service tickets.

    Best regards,
    Krzysztof
