InRoads DTM File name - maximum number of characters?

Hello All,

InRoads V8i SS2; ProjectWise Explorer 08.11.11.574, Win 7 x64

We encountered an interesting situation that I'm hoping someone can clarify.

I've been chasing a crash that was seen when opening a specific DTM file from within ProjectWise, the MicroStation/InRoads session would immediately crash. Having the DTM on the local machine (C drive), when I opened it there was no crash.

The fix has been to make the file name shorter and now it does not crash when opened from within ProjectWise.

So... does anyone know what the rules are with regards to the file name length?

Is the fill path (including the ProjectWise path) part of the discussion OR is it simply the DTM file name that was the issue?

Ideas?

Thanks,

Michael

  • In the past there was a 256 character limit for the full path (all the way down to the datasource name). Is your path name including the file name nearing 256?

  • Hi Kevin,

I copied/pasted the fill PW path (including file name) from PW and pasted it into Notepad++.
Even with the shortened name (that now does not crash InRoads) there are 262 characters. Without the shortened name, it was 283.

I guess this basically means we have been LUCKY until now and that, possibly, we are "flirty with disaster".
It surprises me that we have not bumped it before.

In this particular situation, the first part of the path is: pw:\\xxxpwis01.corp.hatchglobal.com:PW_xxx_DATASOURCE\Documents\...
The end of it is: ...\2134 - FG Type 8 - Sewage Treatment Plant - Bottom.dtm
When in ProjectWise, how is that character limit calculated? When considering the 256 character limit, where is the start/end?

    Thanks.
