MX V8i SS4 - Calculating Earthworks

Dear OpenRoads Experts,

Is there a way to prompt OpenRoads to calculate earthworks as shows on the sketches below? I was examining many possible settings in End Area Volume tool and can't get my head around it. In InRoads SS2 it was easily achievable by defining unsuitable materials by feature. I thought I can get the similar result using Surface Template in SS4 but not. I would be very grateful for any help.

Thanks,
Krzysztof

  • Hi Krzysztof

I am looking at this but at the moment I don't have a solution. Its likely to be something that linemode can do, but I haven't got it yet. Please bear with me.

  • I am having a similar issue. Was a solution for this every found?
  • As for now it is the main functionality we are missing. Lack of SS2 functionality to set unsuitable material by feature makes calculating volumes barley possible. We filled enhancement to be able to set Surface Templates as unsuitable material. That would work as a replacement of Unsuitable Material by Feature.

  • Wesley,

You might also want to submit a service request to Bentley. The more people need it the more chance for having this enhancement we have!

    Thanks,
    Krzysztof
  • Adam,

I can't believe this feature was left out. It is a necessity for us to do our calculations. You said "barley possible", have you found a work around?

    Krzysztof,

How exactly do I submit a service request? I would be glad too!
  • workaround would be to use unsuitable material by station - will work only if you have a single material to be clasified as unsuitable in a single cross-section. so it is not really a workaround.

you can try to model unsuitable materials same way as proposed components - that is very timeconsuming and possible only in simple scenarios.

and you can try to use surface template and classify its componets as MDC. I haven't tested that in depth. You will not get correct cut/fill hatching on your cross-sections this way but with a helkp of Excel you can get volumes of fill and cut. As I said, not tested that in depth, but when reporting Cut should be fine and to fill you will need to add MDC unclassified.

I really need someone from Bentley to say sth here. This is a very basic engineering need. In most project I ve been involved since I started to work as designer I had more than one material to be removed in single station - topsoi of variuos depth, demolitions, etc.

    Adam

  • I have tested the MDC and couldn't get it to work for the existing pavement.  This picture show what we need to be able to calculate.  The right part of existing pavement is calculated as pavement removal/rock but that is it.  Then the left side needs to be calculated as pavement removal/rock and then be filled back in for the proposed condition.
