Corridor Modeling Best Practices

I’m having a little bit of difficulty making the transition from designing with Roadway Modeler to OpenRoads technology and I was curious if it is a settings issue, a workflow issue or a lack of experience and not using the correct OpenRoads tools issue.  When using Roadway modeler I would always take our 2D graphics (i.e edge of road, edge of shoulder, saw cut) from our concept design file and import them as features to be used as horizontal point controls for their corresponding template points.  I never had a problem with this process.  Do you see a problem with this workflow of starting with the 2D horizontal graphics and “importing” them to create the 3D design?  Based on the hands on workshops I sat in on at the conference it seems like the program was intended to take a 3D design and generate your 2D graphics.  I was able to quickly create a corridor of my main road  by setting my template points to horizontally follow my "Civil" features that I created from my concept graphics, so it seems like it should work fine.  However, I was wondering if there is some lost functionality by creating my 3D design this way.

 

2nd Question:

After creating the corridor I describe above, I was not able to use Civil Cells to create a side road T intersection connection because I kept receiving the "element not vaid for this tool" error whenever I would try to select my main corridor edge of road as my reference element.  Based on other posts it seems this is because my edge of road does not have a profile associated with it.  I do not remember applying a profile to the edge of road in the workshops I attended.  I thought the corridor design was taken into account when you select the edge of road and it would tie into that directly.  Is this a setting or do you have to manually create a profile for the edge of road.
