PowerInroads SS4 081109845 crashes when opening any file

I've recently installed the latest version of PowerInroads (845).  The application crashes when attempting to open any file (dgn, dwg, dxf, cel, dgnlib, etc).  I haven't been able to use the program at all.  Bentley tech support recommended I install the latest prerequisite package.  I uninstalled PIR, installed prerequisite pack, re-installed PIR.  No change, still crashes.  The second recommendation from Bentley tech support was to "rebuild my operating system".  I'm not going to do that.  I'm in the process of installing on other computers here in the office to see if it's localized to my machine, but I figured it might help to ask if anyone has any advice.  I've attached the exceptions that are thrown when trying to open the application.  All version prior installed and ran just fine.

These are exceptions 2 of 8 thrown when trying to open a file.

Thanks in advance

  • Michael, before you do anything rash here can I ask you try clearing the application settings just in case something is amiss there.

You can find these under your user folder so something like
    C:\Users\your name\AppData\Local\Bentley\PowerInRoads\8.11\unique long identifier\prefs
(if you have multiple the 845 will be the latest date)

Just zip up the entire folder, upf's and all before deleting and trying clean.
Let me know if this helps and you can get in.

    Regards

    Ian

  • Ian,

Thanks for the suggestion. So far I've tried the following with no luck (#2 is yours):

    1. Install prerequisite package 08.11.09.03.
    2. I tried deleting the preferences in the folder you mentioned.
    3. With the help of our IT personnel I removed all Bentley software from the computer, all Trimble software from the computer (grasping for straws) and re-installed PowerInroads v845.
    4. We were able to install on another similar computer in my office, the only real difference between these two computers is my computer has development software (Visual Studio, Blend, Microstation SDK). Building VS solutions brings with it the need for several versions of the .net framework, so this became our focus. We tried removing and reinstalling various .net framework versions, but no luck. Based on the PowerInroads installer, PowerInroads depends on .net framework version 3.5, it shows up as already installed. But, the closest actual version I found installed was .net framework 3.5 sp1 (in the windows features section).

We finally punted and reinstalled the PowerInroads v789, it (and all other versions up until now) installs and runs fine.
  • Michael,
I'd really like to get to the bottom of this one but I fear it will be a hard one to isolate and I appreciate you need to work.
Digging through the error logs it looks like there is a load order issue and something is not configured right. By any chance did you add / modify any of the cfg files or was it a standard install ?

    Regards
    Ian

  • Ian,

I definitely didn't alter any cfg files after the installation, we tried to remove all traces of Bentley software and then install from scratch. It should be a standard install. The confusing thing to me is the previous I've installed, versions 07536, 09493, 09722, 09789 have all installed and ran fine (except for some minor defects filed). I'm using v09789 now just fine. I welcome any advice, thanks for looking into it!!
  • I've been trouble shooting this issue with no luck still.  I've run debug reports for the 845 version (the one that won't run) and also the 789 version (working fine).  I've looked at the two with a text difference viewer and I really don't know what to make of most of it.  I've attached those files in case someone else knows what to look for.  I also ran Microsoft Debug Diag based on the article found here: http://communities.bentley.com/products/microstation/w/microstation__wiki/16088.microsoft-debugdiag-quick-guide-for-microstation-crash-issues .  I've also attached the resulting analysis from that utility.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • I finally have a functional installation of PowerInroads 845 on my computer. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly what the issue was. The successful install occurred after uninstalling 789, then deleting many folders left behind in "c:\ProgramData\Bentley" and "c:\Program Files (x86)\Bentley". Must have been something left behind that didn't agree with the new version, I noticed some assemblies left behind in "c:\ProgramData\Bentley\Civil\Extensions\" that are not located in the same path after the new installation. I really don't know exactly what the issue was though, just glad it's working.
