SS3 Cross section Annotation; Leader Lines

Is there a way to create custom leader lines for annotating cross sections in Geopak SS3?  Currently I am using cells that I created associated with the feature lines built into the template.  They display in certain areas instead of the default "X".  It works well, however, it has significantly bogged down the process of cutting cross sections and navigating through the model.

  • There was certainly some extra cell libraries in there that needed to be removed. Having done that, I still do not see a significant increase in speed, though. Certainly not as quick as what you are seeing. I am thinking I may be bottle necking the processing somehow in the way my workspace is set up. I understand asking for assistance on the forum is the preferred method nowadays, but is it possible to schedule a phone call or some other form of assistance that would simplify the diagnosis of the issue?
  • We have the same problem. cutting cross-sections in SS3 (.722) takes too much time. Even for short corridors. eg. cutting 200 CS takes 30 minutes and more (5 km long corridor with 25 m interval). We display few cells on cross-sections to show:

    -existing RoW
    -proposed RoW
    -temporary RoW
    -undergróund utilities
    -overhead lines
    -fences
    -noise protection

All above is required by our Client. In SS2 it took seconds to cut CS and cells didn't result in processing time. Morever we were able to cut CS without all thes additional information and then update SC when required. there is no update CS function in SS3/SS4. That's shame.

We have projectwise managed workspace if that is relevant.

  • After more testing, I was able to reproduce your problem in SS3 08.11.09.722. However, the problem did not occur in SS4 08.11.09.845. I have confirmed with Product Development that enhancements were made between those versions specifically to address slow processing times in cross sections. I believe in your case, an upgrade to the last version of Power GEOPAK will resolve your issue.

we tested cutting CS with latest SS4 once it was released and indeed it is much faster. The problem is that it might be risky to upgrade from SS3 to SS4 when project is in advanced stage. DGN files need to be updated to SS4 and there is no way back. Moreover we have ProjectWise managed workspace and SS4 can not even start with it - so potentially there are some changes in variables, cfg files etc. that may cause troubles. We wanted to upgrade in the middle of this projet but Bentley Support advised we would better not.

  • Sounds like a solution to the problem and that's great. However, what kind of changes am I to expect going from SS3 to SS4? Is this basically just an updated version of SS3 with a new name? Same modeling tools? Same workflow? What is the process in upgrading files from SS3 to SS4 as Adam mentions in his reply? Is it still possible to import/export information from .gpk files like in SS3?
