So, I found a solution. First, I didn't understand how to use the build pad.

1.) So, I sketched in a 3d perimeter of the section I wanted to cut away from my existing tin.

2.) I selected the line work and created a terrain model, exported that terrain model to a Geopak tin file.

3.) Merged the new tin and existing tin to get a final tin.

4.) Used the volumes dialogue to calculate the difference in volumes.

So as I suggest above you can use the Build Pad tool from the GEOPAK DTM tools. We do not currently have a video for it. I suggested the online help but maybe that was confusing. I apologize. I should have said the GEOPAK Documentation that is delivered with the software. You can access it from the GEOPAK Help in the pulldown menu. Search for the Build Pad tool and review the help for it.

It will allow you to run a slope from an element to a tin file and then build a tin file from that element plus the slope and merge it into the existing TIN.

I would accept legacy or Terrain Model. I'm looking for a procedure on how to use these tools. I just need to cut away a shape from a tin and calculate the volume that was removed. Any help would be appreciated.

When you say 'online help', what exactly does that mean? Do you have a link to a video? Is this not online help?

If you would like to stick with legacy GEOPAK tools then you can use the Build Pad tool under the DTM tool set. The online help for that tool can help with the tool settings.

You could import the TIN into the new Terrain Model tools and there are some nice vertical geometry tools to accomplish the task as well.

What product and version number are you using?
