TERRAIN MODEL EDITS NOT HELD

I have a Terrain Model created from multiple Fieldbooks and appended using the "Create Complex".

I've managed to delete all the pieces of DTM's from each day, and have the one final DTM.

I have made several edits, like deleting triangles along the edge and adding some features.

I played with the Contour interval to locate rod busts.

Certain editing commands, or maybe toggling on and off triangles have caused my edits to revert.

I have no more Fieldbooks, they have been "STRIPED", yet my edits are not always being held.

Why?

Should I export to Land XML and re-import, then work on this surface?

I have toggled the "de-activate rules" back and forth to see if this is the problem.

Are my edits becoming "rules".

I can't find any video or help on this problem.

  • Hi Jason,

After making 12 DTM’s from survey data and “appending” them together into one DTM
I use the Configuration Variable “Civil_Survey_Strip_option” set to 2.
Then the next time I open the drawing it asks if you wish to continue with the “Strip”.
If you say yes, all the “Fieldbook” data within survey is “Stripped” away.
This is analogous to “Write to Graphics”, but I’m told (by Bentley) that it’s more thorough.

After fighting with DTM edits for some time and having them re-appear after certain edits (like add feature),
I exported to a .DTM file.  I then deleted my Terrain Model, and re-imported the .DTM file (Terrain only).
I had hoped all and every strange editing problems would go away, but alas, I still have problems.
If I swap some faces, maybe add or delete some vertices, then add a small feature, boom, the swaps and vertex edits will
    revert back.

It seems you have to add or delete all your feature lines, then export/re-import, then you can use the Edit terrain functions.

Before exporting the first time I played with the ‘Activate Rule”, “Deactivate rule”, “Lock Activation”, etc. etc.
These don’t make any sense when working with survey DTM’s which have breaklines, points, DTM merges, feature adds (and deletes),
face swapping, triangle deletes, etc, etc.  I found my edits constantly and suddenly re-verting back, even after deactivating the survey rules,
deleting all my fieldbooks after “Stripping” them.  I don’t understand these rule toggles, and they don’t seem to work.

Attached is my DGN file.  I’m hoping you can open this and maybe give me a call 208-275-8716.

I’d love to understand how to keep all my edits, no matter what they are, and not have things revert.
This drawing is getting better after the .DTM export and re-import, but I still see the problems happen.

    Thanks,

    Andrew

  • I was just about to post this exact topic, and discovered a work around. Follow these steps:

    1) Once you have built a solid terrain model, with all your edits, export this terrain model as a TIN.
    2) Re-visualize this TIN using the legacy tools as a mesh.
    3) Create a new terrain model using “Create from Elements” tool using this mesh.
    4) Remove all rules associated with this new terrain model
    5) Add new features as desired
    6) Make any additional edits needed
    7) Repeat steps 1-4 again

It appears that creating a terrain model from a visualized mesh is the only way for the program to “save” any terrain model edits you have made.

This is a major flaw in this software, and needs Bentley attention. Edits should not be removed completely with the introduction of new features that do not affect the edit area.
