Rules of a complex element SS4

I am just looking for some guidance and information on rules. Below is a screen shot of the rules that appear when selecting a complex element and our labeled as follows:

1. Lock - Deactivate Rule

2. Unlock - Activate Referencing Rules

3. Lock - Deactivate Referencing Rules

4. Remove Rule

I was wondering what these do exactly and how other people utilize these in their modeling?

That helps Nico thanks! Just one question what is the difference between Lock - Deactivate Rule and Lock - Deactivate Referencing Rules either way I can't edit the element? There doesn't seem the be a difference between the two.

Can you edit other elements? If you can't edit any elements, it is likely that in the selection tool settings, "disable handles" is active. It needs to be deactivated to edit elements.

On the other hand, it does sort of sound like you can edit other elements, but just not this one. In that case, I have no further advice.

I do have the disable handles active and I can edit other elements.

Use the Deactivate Reference Rules command to deactivate reference rules on selected elements. Reference rules are elements upon which the chosen element is dependant, thus a curve between elements depends on the two other elements that define it. This command allows deactivating the rules for those other elements
