XIN file won't save

Hi,

I'am working with P&P and I want to save the settings I have changed in the XIN file, but it doesn't work.

I save the prefs to Test and when I want to load the Test again it is not there?

Thanks in advance.

  • Hello Christiaan,

Are you doing Save as to "Test" or is there any other procedure , please let us know? When I saved as to Test > Load it > closed plan and profile generator dialog box and then reopen it , I could see Test preferences in my drawing.

  • Hi Purva,

Nothing special just Save as close and open and it's gone.

Is there a configvar for the XIN file? I have deleted the XIN file LOCK as you mentioned last time?

  • When this happened to me, I found there was some badly formatted sections in the xin file. Once I determined what they were and fixed them, the problem went away. This required the use of Notepad++ with its XML Tools plug in and a pretty good knowledge of the format of XIN files.

I am not sure how the "bad" data got into the file, but a manual edit of the XIN was required to fix it.

You might be able to salvage a large part of the XIN file using the Copy Preference Application Add-In. The tool will only copy named symbologies used by command preferences and styles that are correctly copied using the tool.

In my case, there were saved preferences, named symbologies and styles in the XIN that were not showing up in the product dialog boxes until I repaired the file. I don't recall if it was not reading anything in the file after the questionable data or if it was able to read some data that was after the bad block, once the end of the section of the file containing the bad data was reached.

XIN files are XML files that store data in a tree like manner. Each branch is self contained with a start and stop tag. Within each branch are usually other branches with their own start and stop tag. You can open an XIN file is the report browser and there are a few reports under the XIN and Survey folders that report on the contents. There are also a few at the bottom of the reports tree that can be used to view the xin file's tree structure. This may help diagnose the problem and may even reveal the  offending data.

  • Hello Christiaan,

    Thank you for your response.

I have recorded video for you of my system as it's working on my system, please refer the following. When I have gone through your video, I observed you are using Program data to save XIN file, can you please change the path to any other drive or any other folder on which you could have full access or rights and then check if still issue persists or not. Please update us on the same.
