OPENROADS Designer - Replacing MX,Inroads and Geopak

Dear All,

I just attended webinar regarding OpenRoads: From Concept Through Construction,

As I understand, OPENROADS CONNECT Edition is replacing all 3 road design software which is MXRoad, Inroads  Geopak.

Recently my client received select renewal OpenRoads Designer rather than MXROAD, so my question would be as below:

  1. Will OpenRoads Designer replace MXRoad?
  2. Currently renewal stated OpenRoads Designer rather than mxroad or inroad.. does it mean we have to remove MXRoad and install this OpenRoads designer and start from beginner to learn?
  3. Can I keep the OLD MXROAD V8i SS4 even though I paid Select subscription for OpenRoads designer?
  4. How the licenses works? do I get charged for over usage if i use MXRoad and OpenRoads designer in same time?
  5. When they will force OpenRoads designer to took over MXROAD?

Please ADVISE..

  • Hi Kugan,

    1) Yes Openroads Designer will replace MX Road - Geopak - Inroads
    2) You still can use MX Road. MX Road is using Openroads Technologie inside so if you using that it won't be a very big step to Openroads Designer.
    3) Good Question no idea, but i think it will be possible to keep using MX Road
    4) -
    5) They will stop support (service tickets) and developing MX Road so don't think they will force you but you never know!

  • Dear Jeroen,

    Thank you for the information,

It seems the legacy of MXROAD using linemode which we still able to do in MXV8iSS4 would not be available in OpenRoads Designer, it is very disappointing.

Most of our client using this method (linemode) since it's faster and produce drawing in seconds compare in interactive method in OpenRoads,

My question is how stable is the dgn file that we need to work on? If the dgn crash, how to retrieve the design/drawing since no backup file to re-run?

I tested 30km length project and it unable to produce the drawing that I required but I can produce faster in linemode,

I am afraid a lot of people is not going to appreciate the huge changes as they need to learn from beginning. This is because most consultants purchase renewal and new license based on MXROAD legacy tool not on OpenRoads Technology,

Consultants also would worry as on-going project (which they design in MXROAD) is crucial and no time to re-adjust everything to new environment and worried on bugs and crashes.

It's going to be hiccup for 1st quarter of year 2017 where sales (renewal/new license) may drop drastically due to this.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Kugan,

I really understand that a lot of people are disappointed that bentley has chosen a other path in OpenRoads by taking out the Linemode (Inputfiles).

Currently i am working on a big project 88km of highway design (With the project we were finalist on the Year in Infrastructure 2016) and we did the total design with Openroads Technologie in MX Road and it works great! We are very happy with the working progress and possibilities.

The DGN files are very stable we are just making backup from our project like you doing with CAD files to be sure if something goes wrong we don't lose a big amount of work!

Of course you have to put time into it to learn the new software but i am sure you can do more with it and deliver a better project. This mainly by the possibilities to visualise your design so you can discuss on the screen with your total project team and not have to generate drawing or things.

If our presentation is online I will post is so you can see our lessons learnt!

    Greetings
  • I shall try to address the questions and deal with the associated speculation

1- Will OpenRoads Designer replace MXRoad?
Answer - OpenRoads Designer is the successor to MX, InRoads and Geopak, so yes
2 - Currently renewal stated OpenRoads Designer rather than mxroad or inroad.. does it mean we have to remove MXRoad and install this OpenRoads designer and start from beginner to learn?
Answer - No. The OpenRoads Designer licencing includes entitlement for the previous products as well as OpenRoads Designer, so you still have all the old product capability available as well and this approach gives you the ability to deal with existing projects and draw down on the new capability with OpenRoads Designer when it suits you and as you undertake training.
3 - Can I keep the OLD MXROAD V8i SS4 even though I paid Select subscription for OpenRoads designer?
Answer - Absolutely Yes. This is the same deal as 3 in that the OpenRoads Designer licencing includes entitlement for the previous products as well as OpenRoads Designer,
4 - How the licenses works? do I get charged for over usage if i use MXRoad and OpenRoads designer in same time?
Answer - Not on the same node / machine
5 - When they will force OpenRoads designer to took over MXROAD?
Answer - Again this ties with 3 in that the OpenRoads Designer licencing includes entitlement for the previous products (ie MXRoad) as well as OpenRoads Designer. We will continue to support MXRoad but will no longer be actively developing it since focus is towards the new product line OpenRoads Designer.

In response to the comments over Linemode. This is a function of MX that is only appropriate to MX workflows so will not be available in OpenRoads Designer which affords other capability and benefits over those provided by Linemode. You still have this capability as a result of the Licensing already discussed so can always import the geometry from the legacy product.

after years watching that 3-way (MX, inroads, GEOPACK) support by Bentley I fully appreciate this sooooooo much.
