future

I would ask what is future inroads, if is this program is still developing, or was already developing quite finished, although he was never completely finished (SS4).

Possibly is planned a larger update (SS5?) and what goes in it?

  • There is a version out in EAP (Early Access Preview) that is based upon the 64 bit Connect Edition. As I understand it, this will be the next version, unless a critical issue is found.

    • MicroStation user since IGDS, InRoads user since TDP.
    • AutoCAD, Land Desktop and Civil 3D, off and on since 1996
  • But this is a new version of MicroStation or no? I want to update Inroads, now is part of the functionality still in SS2, so Inroads not fully integrated into MicroStation and transfer between SS4/SS2 is not ideal, as well as a set of cuts that are not linked to the situation is still lengthy redrawn after each change. The program has a dynamic cuts, but to those is not able drawn the result set of cuts, describe them and save it as model or is it possible?

  • We call this preaching to the choir.
My current assignment requires the use of Ss4, but at our home office, I cannot in good faith recommend moving to Ss4 from Ss2 - even after seeing some of the more advanced features of Ss4. There are far too many bugs, IMHO and the additional setup required for Ss4 over what is needed in Ss2 is equally problematic. We are a small office and with no clients as of yet supplying a Ss4 workspace, the ROI is just not there.
Trying to convert the delivered Civil workspace to meet a client standards seems to be an overwhelming task and too many items cannot be bulk loaded. The XIN link only takes one so far and even if you attack creating Element Templates via BV or VBA, there are a lot of settings in the DGNLIB that do not come from either of these processes.
We also have issues where clients supply a layer standard and expect you to stay within its confines. But many of the new tools need levels for the various outline elements. And having the 3D levels also dictate the cross section levels creates a quandry. So do we draw the 3D objects on the cross section levels or do we draw them on a traditional plan view level?

  • But I do not know, if Bentley ever fix this bugs and complete the program, or if they now make on something that replace Inroads. But this replacement is not yet ready and when comes, then still start debugging (1, 2 or more years?). When Inroads development ended, then all that remains is return to SS2, or try another program Autocad, Carlson etc. Can anyone compare Inroads and others programs (current version)?

  • I've learned enough Civil 3D to be able to maintain and create standards for my company, and to be able to create horizontal alignments and profiles. I've not had enough opportunity to use its Corridor tools. Every time they need a design, they give me such little time, I do it in Ss2 and export the DTM back to Civil 3D using LandXML.
I know InRoads really well and Open Roads has enough InRoads heritage that I am usually able to work my way through it. And they still provide most of the Ss2 tools in Ss4, so in a pinch, I can fall back on my InRoads skill set to get over any stumbling blocks.
This next version appears to completely abandon the InRoads tools. We can only hope that when it hits the streets, most of its bugs will be gone.
I have to agree with you that the current versions of Ss4 should not be considered the end of the line for the "Native" products due to the large number of bugs, since the next version is still quite a long way off.
