ORD Keyboard input / popup menu speed

This is a CONNECT / OpenRoads Designer question.  Is there a way to speed up / reduce the lag of the popup menus?

I'm a keyboard input kinda person.  I can't stand clicking buttons.  Takes to long.  In V8i I memorized all the standard commands and most 2D drawing command shortcuts.  (ie Q1 was smart line.  Q46 was 'Place point on line at distance'.  31 is copy element.  etc...).   As far as I can tell, this does not exist in CONNECT (unless you're in the task navigation workflow).

So, I recreated it myself.  Best way I found to do this was to put it into the quick access popup menu (spacebar).  I completely overrode the menus that are baked in and put all the number hot keys in as well as all the basic drawing commands.  So now the above command examples become SpaceQ1, SpaceQ46, Space31, etc...  Not ideal, but it's better then nothing.

The lag between hitting space and the menu popping up is super frustrating.  Then there is a smaller lag between loading the next sub element.  So the above examples become Space [LAG] Q [lag] 1, Space [LAG] Q [lag] 4  6, Space [LAG] 3 [LAG] 1, etc...

If I type it in to fast, it locks up and doesn't allow keyboard input and I have to back out of those menus (by clicking).

What this amounts to, is spending significantly longer on basic drawing because the lag causes me to not only miss entering commands, but I then have to back out and try again.

Here's my question.  Is there a way to decrease the lag on the popups, or is there another way to accomplish this that has less lag?  (Ideally I'd like to get back to how I did it in V8i)

Thanks in advance.

  • The Keyboard Position Mapping that you are describing has been replaced with Ribbon Pop-ups and Key Bindings. This allows you to use your keyboard to navigate to your favorite commands, and have them appear directly on your cursor. The shortcuts are customizable based on your preferences. The lag may be due to the amount of commands you are saving through the popups. When I tested it with commands that are delivered, I did not experience a lag. How many commands have you placed within this window?

  • Maybe an example will help; if you're in the OpenRoads Modeling work flow and you want to draw a (dumb) line, or want to do a parallel offset, etc. you have to go to a different work flow completely, get the command, and then switch back.  Best case scenario that'll take a few seconds to do.  Multiply that by a few hundred a day and it really adds up.

So, I've modified the space bar popup to handle all the common drawing commands.  As for how many commands I have in the popup; All of the V8i numbered commands (1-9) and their associated sub commands.  Also most of the 2D drawing commands.  I don't feel like it's too many, as the default has a bunch in there.

I'm assuming the Ribbon Pop-ups / Key bindings are the groups of commands in each ribbon bar (see below).

One of the issues I have with this is they change.  So E is General tools in Geometry, Create in corridors, Civil Cells in Model Detailing, etc...  Another issue is the one I described above, it doesn't have the standard commands you use across all workflows in them.  Sure you can pin a group to a workflow, but that's not really feasible with how many commands would need to be pinned and how the ribbon works.

The spacebar popup menu is the best solution I've found so far...  I'm open to suggestions if you have a better way to do this.

    Thanks,

Any hints on how to do this?

I suppose its worth asking - your post is 4 years old, are you still using this?

  • Microstation v8i was so streamlined. Almost everything was done with just two commands. ORD requires 3 keys, space + some command, and of course they're different than what was in v8i. I feel sooo in-efficient.

Is there a summary of these keys?

    Line Q + 2 vs Space + 4 + P

    Copy 3 + 1 vs Space + W

    Move 3 + 2 vs Space + E

    Offset 3 + 5 vs Space 5 + L

    Trim Intersection 7 + 4 vs Space+6+I

    Modify 7 + 1 vs Space + 6 + M

    Extend 7 + 3 vs ???? Haven't found the button?

  • Looks great. Cold you give me a quick insite (or even a link?) as to HOW to modify the space bar popup menu? thx.
