Point control by horizontal alingnment in Road Designer

InRoads V08.11.07.428

I want to control left point of my template by horizontal alg. My control line (alg) looks like on the picture.

Why left side of may template in Road Design is not correct?

  • You may want to examine how those points are constrained. I suspect that the point control is doing exactly what you asked it to do, but that the way the points relate to each other is not reacting the way you expect.

  • Use the Test Point Control > Test Horizontal Control
As you move your cursor, its horizontal location will push or pull the point's horizontally, while the vertical location will still be driven by the remaining constraint. Sometimes, the result is unexpected.
Also, if an alignment doubles back such that the point control has two options, it frequently decides to use the option not wanted.

  • Test horizontal control works. Problem is if Point is controled by alignment . If orthogonal line to alignment crosses alignment somewhere controled poin has wrong location. How to resolve?
  • MSo, how many Point Controls do you have assigned in this model? It looks like at least 4 from the graphic that you posted. And it might help to know what the template is 'supposed' to look like, because it's obviously getting yanked and distorted by the various Point Controls. And MaryB is right about really understanding the Point Constraints when you have Point Controls assigned. And Chuck's suggestion to test the Point Controls is good, but you can't easily test the template reaction if you have a lot of Point Controls assigned to a single Template.

And there is something really odd going on because it appears that the left side of the Template is running at 'zero' offset from the Corridor path, but the Plan view doesn't look like that. You are going to have to provide more insight into how you have your model set up before that can be diagnosed properly.

  • My guess is the template is finding the alignment on the other side of the roadway since the shape of the alignment is a U shape. Point controls will move a point to an alignment no matter how far away they exist and sometimes the program gets confused when an alignment exists twice withing a cross section. It happens all the time with loop ramps as well.

You will have to split the alignment up in to two halves. I would suggest a split at the blue line in your plan view picture.
