How to calculate earthwork from Cross sections excluding existing Components/Features (InRoads V8i Select Series 2)

Good morning everyone.

I created a template for proposed roadway (Proposed Sidewalk, Driveway, Curb, HMA, Sub grade, etc.) and a template for the existing roadway (Existing pavement, Curb, Driveway, Sidewalk, etc.). I combined both into one template which works perfectly (Took forever but eventually worked). Then I create cross sections and try to calculate earthwork by the "End Volume Method" under Corridor Modeling. I go under the "Classification" tab and I set every existing Component to "Ignore". But for some reason when I run the End Volume Method, the calculations still include the Cut/Fill of the existing Quantities.

The goal is to eliminate the volume of existing sidewalk, pavement, curb since they will be paid for by Individual pay items (such as Curb Removal) instead of Earthwork. Thus I only want the Earth Work Quantity for the Proposed components but I can't get get this.

Could a problem be that I am including the Existing Surface which will calculate the difference between the Existing surface and proposed components? How should I approach this?

I have attached an example image of a cross sections:

Here is a cross section where the volume was calculated between the Existing Surface and all proposed components have been IGNORED. Thus the volume calculated for this cross section is the volume I want to IGNORE.

This next cross section is where  the volume was calculated between the Existing Surface and the proposed components. The existing components have been IGNORED. Thus the volume calculated for this cross section is the volume I want to calculate MINUS the existing volume in the previous image:

Any ideas on how I should approach this?

  • Mark,

Thank you for your response. I used the "End Area Volume" under Corridor Modeling, go to 'Classifications', and try to change the 'Classification' and 'Mass Ordinate' columns. Doing so I haven't been able to exclude the area of the existing components. The existing components are suppposed to represent the existing pavement, curb, sidewalk, etc. which will not be included in the earthwork calculations because there are separate removal pay items for them. I am trying to calculate the area between the bottom of the 'existing' components and the 'proposed' components.

Correct. The existing components are created from the surface from Roadway Designer.

I am using InRoads V8i Select Series 2. I apologize in advance if my vocabulary/jargon is not accurate as I am relatively new to InRoads.

    Thank you.
  • Daniel, ya it's tough being new, and equally challenging to answer some questions without knowing certain specifics like the exact version, or using the correct terminology so we know what you are talking about. It's like another language.

Two things that I would check: 1) on the EAV command, General leaf, make sure that your design Surface says 'Design' under the 'Type' column. And 2) on the Classifications leaf, make sure that the Components listed are all set to 'Exclude' under the 'Mass Ordinate' column. Those are the key areas.

  • It might help to post the DGN file with your Cross Sections, along with the ALG file containing the alignment.

  • Mark,

    Thank you for understanding.

In the General leaf, my Corridor Name (Design Surface) is 'Design' under the type column. My Terrain (existing surface) is "Existing' under the type column.

In my Classification leaf, I set all my components to 'Exclude' but the area that is being calculated is not accurate. I have been trying to switch the component's 'Classification' from 'Designed' to "Unclassified/Rock/Unsuitable/etc." and changing the 'Mass Ordinance' from 'Include' to 'Exclude' and vice versa (hoping that maybe a different combination may give me the correct area) but every combination I have tried does not give the desired area.

No Idea what to do next. Any other possible ideas?

    Best,
    Dan
  • Any other ideas? I am still trying to figure this out and this seems like it is impossible! Is there anyway to make the existing components (By feature) act as a surface?

I was thinking since the program uses the surface/terrain to calculate earthwork is there anyway to add these Existing components by feature as part of a surface? The existing components are "Overlay/striping" components in the template model. Is there anyway this could work in my favor?

I apologize if this doesn't make sense. I am just trying to make this work. It seems impossible.
