When I open a survey project (that works fine in V8 2004 and V8 XM) in V8i, the project preferences get changed. For instance, on the project tab, the directory was left blank, but in V8i it is filled in with the User's description. Also, on the Dataset tab the Data Source is Empty, and the Linking Codes are all blank. Also, on the Geometry tab the station format is changed from 12+34 to 1+234. Several other items have changed, but needless to say, this is a royal pain. Is there something wrong with my installation, or is this a known bug in V8i?

This is a known bug and has already been reported. I did find this in the notes for the ticket.
Work around: After opening the project>preferences make sure to open a dataset and most of the preferences will be come back again.
I haven't tried it myself but you can give it a shot.
