Im looking for a way to display 12D mesh elements in my OpenRoads cross sections.
I can import the .IFC file as a reference or as CAD elements and was hoping it would work like a Revit file so that i could see it. I assumed i needed to change some style configuration associated wit the IFC import but when i use the Item Explorer tab my model crashes every time. This could be because there are too many elements....?
My ultimate goal is to use OpeRoads as a medium to display MX models, 12D models, Inroads models and Revit models all in the same cross sections but stuck with the 12D solids.

I don't have much knowledge on this but I do know that we have an enhancement logged for the ability to import a 12D surface into OpenRoads. Enhancement 561995.
It may be good for someone else with experience with the 12D and IFC Referencing to chime in and provide more information, but I do know we are looking to add the ability. This would allow us to create a Terrain Model and we could display that imported Terrain in the sections as it would be a Bentley Civil TM.

I can turn the elements i bring in from the IFC import into a TM but was really hoping i could skip that step and still be able to see the elements. For instance, when creating a terrain model the model will need to be triangulated and if its a circular element such as a pipe or the underside of a bridge i might not get the correct TM. The files would also lose any special information associated with them.
Best case would be to just reference the different models into my design model so as they are updated in their respective package i get the latest updates in my OR model.
hmm I think your issue has something to do with your 3d model.
What I did is just open a new default 2d seed, draw an alignment and profile it to get ORD to automatically create the 3d model, go to the 3d model, reference the IFC in and fo back to the 2d model to display sections. I just had the default Wireframe display style active and it displayed fine. You shouldn't need to create a new 3d dgn to reference the IFC into if your drawing has a 3d model.
Also, Inroads SS4 OpenRoads should work the same way...

Will MX import Revit (rvt) & Navisworks (nwc, nwd) files? The reason is that we work with Autodesk and our client requires to review the Models in MX

I assume you mean the client wants to review the models in Microstation. MX is a road design tool and cant import rvt and nwd files. If you use the Microstation connect edition there are a lot of additional features where you may be able to reference in model files from other packages. I saw a lot more options when using OpenRoads ad think Microstation connect would be the same.
Bentley supply a free add-in to Revit which will publish an i-model from Revit. This i-model ('filename'.i.dgn) can be referenced into MX like any other DGN file.

We have used the Revit imodel exporter in Revit quite alot and it works well. Unfortunately there is no Navisworks referencing / import functionality so the best option would be to get a Navisworks IFC export package and use this as the first you use to allow viewing in MX.
What David is referring to is that MX uses a Microstation "front end" to import and reference the newer exchange formats like IFC, imodel etc.
