I am currently erasing a lot of of extra index contour labels (the labels are large since it is a large scale drawing) I have lots of small index contours that form small closed loops (The TIN is LiDAR generated, so I have lots of these). Each contour gets a one label no matter what the label spacing is. See Screenshot
An option to have a minimum length to have a contour be labeled would be nice, whether is user inputted, or hard coded to some factor of the label size.
TIA

Dan,
I created an enhancement request for this.

I too am having the same problem. It is a lot of work to make a decent looking contour map using existing data. I am also (Dare I say it .....) an Eagle Point / AutoCAD user. A handy tool that EP does not auto label contours, you have to do it manually. It goes fairly fast, just activate the tool and drag the line across the contour where you want the label to be. I like this, because it allows you to control the placement of the label and they don't end up in undesirable locations. It would be nice to have a little more versatility.
I consider contour labeling to be a big downside for Bentley civil products. While the automatic contours are great when designing with transient contours, there must be more control over their placement for final drawings. Other software packages provide tools to create labels in specific locations by picking a point on the contour or by dragging a line across a series. Some packages like Civil 3D and Land Desktop have contour labels that can be moved along the contours dynamically without leaving breaks and gaps in the old locations. I know Microstation has the capabilities to do this. All we need is a text element with a mask that can be moved along a contour along with tools to place contours manually. I am amazed that the Geopak products have been in use for over 8 years and yet there are no contour labeling tools other than some custom routines that end users have had to build on their own.

I don't know InRoads at all so I should not have been so broad in my statement.
In InRoads, can the labels be moved after they have been placed without leaving a gap in the contour? Do they update when the surface model changes or do they have to be re-applied after edits to the model? Does the software remember the label placements so they can automatically be re-applied?
