I am designing ponds that have pumped inlets and outlets. I currently export the terrain (DTM) from ORD to SS2 to do the calculations? Is there an easier, better way to do this in ORD?
How are you designing the pond? If you have 3D features, you could make a terrain from the pond elements, and calculate volumes to existing ground or a plane at given level.
Mark:
I have no problem calculating the material volumes in the construction of the pond, ie the cut and fill. I am having problems calculating the pond water volumes to various elevations in ORD. In SS2 the command is Evaluation\Hydrology and Hydraulics\Compute Pond Volumes. What should I do in ORD?

In the Terrain tab, use Analysis > Volumes > Analyze Volume. In the dialog, use Volume Method 'Terrain model to plane' i.e. water level. It will give a cut and fill volume, but you only need to worry about the fill. This tool (for some reason) does not stay active, so you have to reselect it for the next level you want to test.
The result is not the same as the pond water volume for the following reasons.
1. If the terrain extends past the plane elevation and goes below the plane elevation, then that exterior area's volume to the plane is also calculated. My ponds have a berm on all sides and I am not interested in the volume over the outside of the berm.
2. The volume is calculated above the plane elevation. This may have a useful function, but is UFI when calculating pond fluid volumes.
3. For this function to work, a terrain has to be created that only contains the features (linework) involved in the calculation.
4. For now, I am exporting the terrain out to SS2 and performing my pond volume calculations there. I am using ORD to do cut and fill calculations as it agree with SS2.
Please have Pond Volume Calculation functionality added to ORD. I design industrial sites and every site has at least 1 containment pond, ie storm water.
Thank you for your suggestions, I consider this matter unresolved unless one of the storm water packages that my ORD license will let me access can calculate the volumes.
1. Fair enough.
2. Yes, but that volume can be ignored for pond volumes.
3. Yes. I presume you have a 'proposed' terrain that includes lots of other elements.
4. To save having to export to SS2, you could create a contour at the required height and quickly make a terrain from that. Then it is completely inside the pond and you get the results you want. (I displayed the terrain element contours, then did an Analyse Point to place a line string in the 2D view that snapped to the exact contour I wanted, and applied the elevation to it). Just another alternative.
