ORD u2 - Annotate points

Hi,

In Inroads / PowerCivil it was / is very easy to annotate Cogo or Coordination points. Now I try to do the same in Open Roads Designer update 2. Unfortunately without any reasonable result.

A practice example is that a client mails me a coordinate list (xls or txt file) with XYZ coordinates, a name and description. In Inroads I can import the list, see a nice overview with information in a table (I miss this), choose or edit a Style (in the Edit Style) in the View Horizontal Annotation and label the points.

In OpenRoads Designer I tried the Element Annotation in the Drawing Production Ribbon. I suspect a menu where I can choose and edit different Annotation Features or Styles, where I can switch between showing only the for example Name and the XY-Coordinates, the Name and Description.

Is this possible in ORD and if the answer is yes, where can I find some tutorials / examples. I searched this community without any result.

thanks in advance,

Louis

  • Has anyone had any success at annotating points in ORD? For COGO Points there has to be the traditional ability to annotate the Name / N / E / Elev / Description at least. How is this done? The Text Favs don't seem to have the capability to do this with ORD Points. Am "I" missing something ... or is ORD missing something? Is it possible to somehow use the Survey Annotation capability? I haven't been able to get that to work, but that's the annotation functionality that I'm after. Bare minimum I need to be able to annotate the Name of COGO Point ...but can't get it to work.

  • I have made it work. You create a point annotation group with no specific favorite and it fills in the name. Than, you assign that as annotation to any Point Feature Symbology. Finally, you can annotate by model or element.

i am relaying this from memory but it was within the last few weeks I figured this out. If I see I’m missing steps or mixing something up, I’ll try to update this post.

  • Chuck, thank you!! That worked, but that's not very intuitive. I don't understand why the Text Favorites don't have annotation categories like the Name, Description and so on for the Points like they do for the Linear elements. It's almost as if the stand alone Point elements weren't considered in the Text Favorites. I guess my next step will be figuring out how to include the Description in my Annotation Group.

  • Hi Nezmar \ Chuck,

Can you show me an example screenshot, on how you did this..

  • That's not the only place points appear to be the red-headed step-child. You cannot define an "Active Feature" for points, as near as I can see which also means there can be no "Use Active Feature" setting that can apply to points, figures and other feature types.

  • So this is the image of the Manage Annotation Group dialog box. With no favorite, prefix or suffix, this is what displays. The result is the point number. If you try to add a prefix or suffix, all you get is the prefix or suffix. Where the RWPNT comes from is anybody's guess, but it works. So far I cannot locate any favorite that can be point specific for individual points. The fact that this label works might even be a bug. I did find I could get a Text Favorite using Cell.Origin field, and defining a two line text favorite with the top line the Y and the bottom line the X. This assumes your point uses a cell.

This next image is the results used on my "example" property corner points, These can be annotated or have annotations removed using the element or model annotation tools.

  • Chuck, I completely agree with you about "points". Even their connection with the Element Templates is different than linear items. You can place an ORD line and then go to the linear Element Templates and change the Color, or Weight or Line Style and the ORD MicroStation graphics automatically update, whereas the Points don't react that way at all. In fact, the Point properties in the Element Template seem to be held somewhere in the MicroStation file at the time of placement and then statically assigned to that ORD Point object. They can't be updated after placement very easily. Linear objects don't react that way at all. It's not very intuitive and of course I don't know if it's broken or a WAD.
