ORD attach drawing to profile view

I am almost 99% sure that with ORD we can finally attach drawing model to dynamic profile views. I saw that during one of Bentley Group event I attended when I asked about that and this capability was presented by the instructor -at that time I was so happy with this that I don't really recorded in my memory how it was achieved.

This is needed for example to have geotechnical profiles created with 3rd party software displayed on, or other archival project profiles attached for better context when designing road's vertical alignment or ditches.

1) I tried to use microstation reference tool to attache profile drawing into dynamic profile view - I got it referenced. Works fine providing the profile drawing created with named boundaries has no vertical exaggeration. No matter to what value the active exaggeration is set in the dynamic profile view.. I have this feeling this is not recommended workflow to use microstation.

2) there is an additional icon in once Profile View is oppened: Attache All Profile Views. However it does not work for me. Help file says nothing about that icon. Connect Advisor contextual tab returns nothing and again I have this feeling  that tis is what I am looking for.

Can you advise please? How to get profile drawings attached to profile space?

  • 1)  At this point, I think the ability to attach a reference to a Profile Model View using the CAD tools does seem to work, but I don't think it is the design intent of the tool.  Attaching this type of reference to a Profile element may make is susceptible to issues you may or may not be able to prevent.  It can maintain the relationship between the Profile and the attached file even without a Saved View.  So, my advise would be to tread lightly if you want to do this sort of attachment for design.  It may be good practice to detach the references when the design is completed if this is what you want to use the tool for.

    2)  I am looking to see what this custom tool is used for in the profiles.  I will update when I find the purpose of this view tool.

I think with the next ORD update, we are working on some new clipping tools that allow you to place a clipping boundary in the profile view and it will clip the 3D Model to show the lines and points of 3D crossing elements along that profile.

  • #1 - I would rather not to snap to referenced elements, that would be just a general context for my design like level of water surface, geotechnical substrata and other relevant information. I can reference profile drawing model to profile design model providing the drawing was cut without scale exaggeration.  presented different kind of tool in our office - looks I was so exited with ORD new tools that didn't record that in my memory. I am not sure if he used Cad referencing - I would rather say it was Attach All Profile Views tool. And I see no action when hit this button.

#2 - there are two kind of tools - one in Technology Preview state (this would clip 3D model to show sections of 3D culverts, bridges, etc) - Dynamic Profile Views, and the other, that I suspect, would do the magic for me: Attach All Profile Views - and this shoul do what I need.

Could you please investigate that as well? help says nothing, the Connect Advisor contextual tab returns no findings.

    Thanks.

    Best,

    Adam
